To prove to herself that she is not a lesbian, Rebecca Lobo texts Ray Allen, who gave her his number via a Facebook message a long time ago. "How was the rest of the party?" she says.

Ray Allen texts back. “lame wut u doin”

Rebecca Lobo texts, “Nothing. Not tired. What about you?”

Ray Allen tells her she should come over.

She says she's too drunk to drive, so Ray Allen calls her. They spend a long time talking, and Rebecca Lobo feels buoyant in her bed, like an empty sponge in the sink. Ray Allen's voice is weird, his intonation all wrong the way drunk peoples' intonation sometimes gets. He says, "I like you, I've liked you since I first saw you."

Rebecca Lobo doesn't know what to say to this. After a brief deliberation, she says, "thank you, I like you too."

Ray Allen keeps saying that he has practice in a few hours and Rebecca Lobo keeps telling him he should go to sleep, but he repeats, "I'll be alright," and then there's always a few seconds of silence while they both try to think of what to say to make it seem like they have that conversational chemistry you're supposed to have.

Eventually, Rebecca Lobo gets bored of talking and tells Ray Allen that she won't be a party to keeping him up any longer. Ray Allen says "okay, sweet dreams," because he thinks "sweet dreams" sounds more sincere than "good night" and Rebecca Lobo says, "good night. Talk to you soon."
